There was nothing going on yet with the blackmail case. Eddie didnât have info yet and there were no new developments. I took Friday off, and Cory and I spent Friday into Saturday together. I recharged. We had rotating security and investigations going, although very little of the latter.
Mandy was with me, always. It hurt, always. I felt guilty when I was with Cory but she made me happy. The healing after the surgery had been slow and very painful. It didnât feel like I would ever be free from the pain of grief, but physically I was healing slowly but steadily. On Sunday I had dinner at one of my brothers. The family had gathered there. Cory was with her Dad and sister and she sent me a few text messages. A detective had come to see her about her ex. He had made bail and apparently he had a broken jaw as well as a missing tooth. There was an order of protection on him to stay away from her. Which of course meant there would be one issued for me as standard operating procedure. And that meant, because I had a carry permit, I had to forward that info to the NYPD licensing division. I hadnât been notified yet.
I got home Sunday night, and after taking care of the furry family, I sat and enjoyed a good book, The Burning Season, a PI novel written by Wayne Dundee. You had to be careful with the Hannibal novels. Dundee had this habit of making it seem like everything was okay, mission accomplished, and then he killed a character you had come to care about. Bastard.
I got a text from Cory inquiring if I might be interested in what was commonly called a booty call. I responded Hell Yes! And the doorbell rang less than a minute later. She was there with a huge grin on her face and told me sheâd had been sitting in her car when she sent the message.
The rest of the night, the end of the weekend, had been a lot more fun than I had thought it would be, all deference to Wayne Dundee aside. On Monday things would start to break on the blackmail case, and in the coming weeks I would look back very fondly on the past three days.
